One Big Happy Family

I’ve more or less ripped this show almost from the beginning, and for good reason. It used its same bag of tricks for, I’d say 3 seasons now, and it was starting to get stale. However, as this season manage to do, which this show tends to do quite a bit, it grew on me. It was a rough 12 weeks (shit) but we managed to get through it all. And now with Season 7 at an end, we await the Gallaghers and their triumphant return. Now enough of this bullshit, lets swan dive into this motherfucker.

Monica is dead. Wasn’t sure if you noticed last episode, but I don’t think anyone was thinking she’d make it out of this alive. I did write a few weeks back that I wouldn’t put it past her to fake some kinda fatal illness to fuck Frank or any of the kids over, but it seems our crack-fiend had a change of heart. And honestly, I wasn’t too upset at her dying. She was never a character I was too fond of, kinda like Frank’s long lost daughter. She was just there, and when she was there, she wasn’t anything special. She would just come along and ruin anyone of the Gallagher’s stories, just as they were getting good. It was almost like she was used as a “get out of Jail free” card for lazy writing.

That being said, even though I wasn’t a big fan of her, seeing Frank’s reaction was truly a testament to William H. Macy’s acting. I know Daddy Frank has been consistently in the contention for an Emmy, and it’s so sad that he most likely will never get one, but he really is a superb actor. His speech at Monica’s funeral was so emotional, I thought I felt a tear roll down old TDR’s cheek. Musta been the sweat from my hangover…

Biker Treasure

From the moment we saw that key, I think we all knew it led to some kinda treasure. And lo and behold, it led to a Gallagher treasure: 7lbs. of good ole fashioned crank! Now I’m a little unclear on what happened there. The meth was hidden by Debbie before Frank could put it in Franny’s bed. After their scuffle, Fiona finds two of the bags on her bed and ends up stuffing them in Monica’s casket, which leaves five bags left. Did I not see the other five bags in that pile? Or did five of the kids keep their bags? From the looks of the closing credits, it looks like everyone kinda moved on, so I gotta assume it was all five.

However, even more curious: the mention of a man living there with Monica. Now this was brought up and dismissed rather quickly. Well, not really dismissed, just not acknowledged. And I may be reading into this a bit more, but who was this mystery man and what is his importance? It obviously wasn’t Frank since he didn’t know about the unit. I can’t imagine it was anyone really important, unless…If any of you eagle eyed viewers saw what I saw, there was a leather jacket hanging on a coat rack in the front of the unit. And from my vast knowledge of storage units and illegal activity, this would be a great place to hideout, were someone being pursued by the law. Alas, may our fateful hero have been hiding out in Monica’s storage unit? I was waiting for him to return in a post credit scene, but our Jimmy/Steve theories will have to wait until Season 8. Those tricky fucks.

Fiona Trump (Part 2)

If we mention the acting abilities of Daddy Frank, we can’t discount our heroine either. Emmy Rossum turned the jets on during her fight with Frank. The one thing that she said wouldn’t get to her this season finally broke her, as she blamed Monica for literally everyone’s misfortune, including how Frank turned into the derelict he is today. Quick sidenote: did anyone know Frank went to college? The thought never even crossed my mind, but it makes sense will all his intelligent ramblings on social and political issues. Not to mention he was a dud before he met Monica. Hopefully the explore some more of that next season.

Speaking of college, it looks like we were right, once again. Lip’s quest for the coveted college degree looks more and more likely. And it would appear that we haven’t seen the last of both Sierra and Profesh. This may be the first time I’ve ever been excited for the next season of Shameless. Usually  I’ll just scroll through the Fall TV preview and just mutter an “oh yeah, this show” but this could be a pretty exciting season coming up.

However, with Fiona buying the apartment complex from Real Estate hunk, do we see the same shit we saw this season? Her fixing up the place, running into building issues, solving said issues, buying a new place? My hope is we see some kinda time jump, maybe like 2-4 years down the road. Fiona has a good chunk of buildings she owns, Lip is finishing up college, Carl is finishing up military school, Debbie is a welder, and Ian is still banging dudes. That would help them break their old bag of tricks mold. It would also help bring back Carl in a more realistic timeline.

Some tidbits for the road

Carl has returned! For an episode. The good person in me hopes we see him go back to military school, just so he doesn’t turn into the inevitable serial killer he was born to be. But the morally ambiguous person in me hopes he comes back, to do what he does best: cause absolute chaos.
